Mission of Lit Review

The purpose of lit review is to provide a venue for the first year MCB class to come together once a week to focus on a problem from the primary literature.  The major emphasis of the sessions is to understand how the hypotheses of the paper are derived and then tested.  An additional purpose of Lit Review is to give students practice leading a discussion section.

The class will collaborate on the discussion and analysis of scientific questions in molecular and cellular biology and learn how to evaluate a range of topics that span the interests of the group.

There will be 6 themes/topics this year: mind-altering pathogens/parasites, regeneration including regeneration of tissue with stem cells, microbiome,  tumor cell biology/tumor microenvironment, non-coding RNAs (including miRNAs and RNAi), and species co-evolution (host-pathogen or symbiont).  Each theme will be introduced by a faculty member who will lead a discussion of a paper. Subsequent papers will be chosen by 1st Yr MCB students who will also lead the discussion in the  following sessions in that topic.

1. The papers will be made available for download from this website. Only one paper per session to analyze and discuss, but an additional 'Perspective' may be provided for background.

2. The presenters of each lit review assignment may post one or more question(s) or comments to guide you in your reading. .

3. Prepare some questions about the paper and/or comments you'd like specifically discussed. The major emphasis here is on the ideas in the papers, so don't get too hung up on the techniques or the figure layouts.

4. You should plan on reading the paper very thoroughly. Come ready to discuss the paper and be prepared to be asked about it.
